The Good Old (Lantern Festival) Days
posted by jess @ Oct 01, 2009 02:22:29 PM

Remember the days back in the 1990s, kids around the estate would gather together after sun-down with our packets of colorful candles and paper lanterns, ready to make our yearly "rounding" around the estate. It was a tradition - our tradition. Laughing at the neighbor who's cute little 50 cents lantern caught fire or lanterns falling off the cheap 10 cents stick, onto the floor and gets stepped over / burnt were one of the many highlights of the night.

Building a pool of melted candle wax underneath a stone stool in the middle of the old HDB estates or on a round stone table was next. Everybody gathers around and start piling our candles, trying to make the biggest candle-bond-fire we would. The small dare-devil in us will then dip our finger(s) into the hot wax just for the fun of it and making stupid designs with our finger prints and the dripping wax all over the stone table, floor, seats...

Try doing half of that in the current Singapore. You will very likely get warned by a policeman who has probably been notified by some nosy neighbor / passer-by with the excuse of something like

"They will burn down the playground!"

"It is so dangerous, playing with fire! What if they burn the flat down?!"

(-.-)zZ OH, COME ON! No-lifers!

better get back to work

i dont know about playing psps being thoughtless but it is rather ill-mannered when i see them out with friends but playing their psp.

i do miss the days of accidentally burning a couple of my lanterns tho. simple fun.

no update from you in a while. been busy?
